As always this time of year includes the obligatory New Years resolutions which for most people stay the same every year. In fact, the most common New Year’s resolutions are:

  • Drink Less Alcohol
  • Get a Better Education

  • Manage Stress

As you can see there are a lot of themes that everyone is familiar with including quitting smoking – this could be cigarettes or marijuana – and the sad thing is most people make the same resolutions year after year and do not keep them.

Why is this?

Mostly this is because they are made on the spur of the moment while slightly drunk or high perhaps. Made with every intention at the time, but made out of a desire for change and bettering ourselves without any real clue on how to achieve these goals.

So we go ahead with our lofty goals by immediately dieting, trying not to spend money, getting a gym membership, and going cold turkey with out quit smoking aims.

Then what happens?

Dieting becomes hard and whatever fad we jump on loses it’s appeal very quickly, post Christmas bargains call to us and we convince ourselves we are saving money until one day we find ourselves back in debt and it all seems hopeless again, the gym membership gathers dust after we go a few times then suddenly get busy… and smoking, well once those cravings hit and you have a bad day a single relapse makes you feel your resolutions is broken and it is all forgotten about till next year.

What this really means is that resolutions will never work because we never really plan them out. They are started in a burst of passion and desire for change but without a framework to actually achieve these things.

Now the entire process of quitting takes a lot of introspection, planning, dedication and motivation, but the best thing you can do to start is this.

Apply the power of the pen!

Writing things down is one of the most amazing psychological motivators you can get as weird as that might sound. The sheer action of putting your thoughts on paper where it cannot be twisted and changed by your cravings, bad moods, and other mutable things in your mind is astounding.

My suggestion is to write down 3 things first:

1. Put down your exact quit date. Do not make this immediate – make it when you know you will be ready to go and get this done!

2. Write down how you plan to go about your first week. Will you cut down slowly? Will you go cold turkey? Write down exactly how you plan to quit and a week or two’s worth of exact timetabling.

3. Also write down what you plan to do with the time you usually spend smoking. Make a plan to fill that time with something rewarding, fun, distracting – anything that will take your mind of your smoking habit.

These are very helpful to have down in black and white, pend and paper. Once there your quitting plan becomes much more solid! You can probably think of other things you might want to write down, motivational phases, notes to yourself – it could be anything – just get those thoughts out of your head and onto something unchangeable!

Cravings this hurdle we all face when we decide to quit smoking weed. I believe that it’s not the act of smoking that you crave, it is the mental state that goes along with getting high when you smoke. Many people who try to quit smoking weed after a period of heavy use, are surprised by the strength of the cravings they feel. Cravings can control you behavior. You may find yourself calling your dealer, or going to doing activities that are likely to expose you to it, even though you have decided to quit. It is different for everybody. Some people constantly think about pot, some people go out of their way to get it, and some people cave in to the withdrawal symptoms after a couple of days of insomnia and anxiety.

I used to go through a process where I would smoke all of the weed I had as fast as possible, because I was convinced it was my last bag. When I ran out, after being blitzed for days on end, the cravings began and I would cave in to them and repeat the process. It was a mental, emotional, and financial roller coaster. Gradually, through several attempts that spanned over 6 months, I was finally able to overcome my cravings and quit marijuana.

What causes cravings?

There are many causes for cravings. Different people respond to different craving triggers. For some people, it will be a stressful day at work, for others partying with their friends on the weekend is when they crave it. Typically you will crave weed in when you are doing the same activities that you would normally do high. If you normally spark up a joint as soon as you get home from work, you are likely to crave then. If you usually smoke before watching a movie, that may be a craving time for you. Some people also crave marijuana as a response to stress. For example, if you smoke weed to avoid doing homework, housework, or other responsibilities, you will probably crave when facing these same tasks.

How long do the cravings last?

Cravings start as soon as they have peaked from the last time they smoked. When you actually quit smoking weed, cravings start as normal, but intensify, particularly in the first 5 days. Cravings will come and go depending on your own triggers and the strength of you addiction. After a month, I found that I got into a groove. I read that it takes 45 days to solidify a new behavior. Coming home from work and not smoking right away, is an example of new behavior. Even years after quitting, you may find you the thought of pot dancing in your head.

Tips to avoid craving marijuana

  • Gradually decrease your use. Instead of stopping 100%, you may wish to slow down your smoking as you approach the date that you want to quit.
  • Monitor your internal dialogue. Pay attention to your thoughts. If you are having craving thoughts, you can say a phrase such as “I am happy my lungs are healthy”, or “I enjoy being clean”.
  • Don’t let you negative thoughts or thoughts of cravings get the best of you.  Focus on what you are gaining, not what you are missing.Get outside and exercise. Burn off some of the steam and stress from quitting with a little bit of exercise. Even a 30 minute walk outside will do wonders for you.

It always amazed me that some people were able to quit smoking weed with relative ease. Some people can stop smoking weed like they are giving up fast food, without a second thought they just do it.

I didn’t find it that easy. Quitting to me meant changing my entire life, not a small thing but a HUGE deal which I was both excited and apprehensive about. Weed was part of every area of my life, smoking before work, smoking at lunch and then as soon as I got home from work. I’d usually smoke three or four times a night (sometimes a few more!) and I’d always smoke before doing any chores to ‘get me in the mood.’ It wasn’t just whilst I was smoking that I was high, weed will stay in our system for days after smoking so there was never a time when I was free from the effects of weed.

To me, quitting weed sounded great until I had my last joint and looked at my empty tin. I was already wishing I had more and I had only just smoked ‘my last joint.’ I told friends that I wanted to quit but six months later I’d still be smoking and saying the same thing. I kept saying to myself ‘maybe I’m just meant to be a smoker’ but I was well aware of what weed was doing to me and knew that if I could only find a way to quit then things would get better.

What I needed was a proven way to quit smoking weed, I had read EVERY piece of information I could find over the months and nothing worked. I was begging for someone to help me stop smoking weed and no one was giving me the right answers, I was STILL smoking even though I was desperate to quit.

In the end I found the answer, I quit smoking weed more than one year ago and will NEVER smoke again. My life is so much better now and I feel better than I have ever felt before, I have the life that I was desperate to have when I was depressed, overwhelmed and anxious. Now I’m overwhelmed by all the great things in my life and I have myself to thank for it. I quit weed and now I am going to show you how you can quit too, no matter what your circumstances.

The first thing you need to do is decide that you want to quit. I can hear you say ‘of course I want to quit!’ But do you? Do you think that weed makes you happy or that you need weed to get through all the stress you have? If you think you need to smoke weed for whatever reason then your giving yourself mixed messages. For example you want to quit because your unhappy but the only thing that makes you happy is weed. So what do you do? You keep smoking weed to make yourself happier. Of course this is nonsense and when you really think about it I’m sure you see that weed doesn’t make you happy in the long run, it will more than likely make you feel depressed and so you will smoke to feel better. That’s the trap most people (including myself) fall into.

It’s easy to overlook something as ‘small’ as this but it can easily make the difference between quitting today or not being able to quit at all.

Next, you need to know what triggers you to smoke. For me it was boredom and habits I got into like smoking before work. Waking up and thinking ‘weed’ is a bad habit and once I learned how to change these habits (along with other changes) I found I was able to quit. It can be done when you know how.

If I never speak to you again I want you to know this, you WILL quit eventually if you continue to search for the answer. Don’t ever stop trying to quit and some day (maybe soon) you will have the freedom I now enjoy.

There are various tips, tricks and techniques to help you quit smoking weed. Certain things that you can do to make quitting much easier, but first we must need to know what were doing. In this article I’d like to give you some information that will hopefully be an asset to you when you quit smoking weed.

Have a plan

Decide what your going to do, when your going to do it by and don’t skip the details. Be as specific as possible about what you intend to do. Then most importantly, do it. By now I’m sure you have no idea what I’m talking about so heres an example plan.

  • Quit smoking weed two weeks from now. (Have a specific day)
  • Change associations
  • Practice self discipline
  • Cut down on smoking weed for the two weeks
  • Try to get some weak hash or weak weed for the second week
  • Continue to cut down on the weak hash/weed
  • Begin new activity or hobby
  • Keep busy and stay active
  • Eat enough fruit and vegetables to help clear the system
  • Stay away from temptations. Like going round friends who smoke weed or being around weed or stress

Just to be clear I want to explain the bullet points in more detail.

Change associations

When do you usually smoke weed? Do you smoke in the morning first thing or as soon as you get home from work? Do you like to smoke whilst you whilst gaming or walking the dog? Whatever you are usually doing when you smoke, it’s time to change it. Why? Because it doesn’t take long for your brain to associate getting home and getting high so that the first thing you think of when you get in is ‘time for a joint.’ The same thing goes for waking up in the morning or any of the other associations you might have. If your like I was then you may wake up in the morning and the first thing you think is ‘weed.’ See, that’s a bad association, associating waking up with getting high. I’m obviously not pointing the finger here, I was this bad at one point. Yet I managed to quit smoking weed and so can you.

Self Discipline

Self discipline begins on the first day when you set your ‘quit smoking weed date’ and gets stronger everyday until you have completely quit. Reading this takes discipline, changing an association takes discipline and cutting down will take discipline. Building up until you quit smoking weed, but it doesn’t stop there because everyday you don’t smoke is a day that you strengthen your will power. (I didn’t want to say discipline again)

Smoke Weak Weed or Weak Hash

Not the most professional advice I have ever given but smoking weak hash or weak weed will help you get used to smoking and not getting as high. That’s a good thing if your trying to quit.

Cutting Down

This is a highly recommended, though not essential by any means. Cutting down before you quit smoking weed will mean that you get used to feeling ‘normal’ instead of feeling high all the time. Don’t forget that although you might only feel buzzed for an hour after smoking, you still have side effects of smoking for hours and often days after your last joint. By cutting down you will get use to feeling ‘normal’ which can be a bit of a shock if you are like I used to be. By smoking less you will also increase your will power and even at this point you will get a taste of the benefits when you start to think clearly and feel more energetic.

Begin a new activity or hobby

It’s important to keep your mind occupied when you quit smoking weed otherwise you might not be able to get it off your mind. Any form of physical activity will help by relieving stress, keeping you busy and getting rid of any cravings you have. It will also help you sleep better at night. Any other activity or hobby you have will also take up some time and keep you distracted whilst you are quitting. Anything to keep your mind off the fact that you want to smoke.

Of course there are techniques to lower your cravings and even some that will make you not want to smoke weed at all. I was a chronic smoker for six years and using these techniques allowed me to quit. What surprised me more was that it wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be, there were small cravings but it would have been harder to smoke than it was not to smoke.
